The invitation I received to Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story describes the plot as ‘the true twisted love story of the 1920s Chicago students who killed for the thrill’. I clearly skimmed past that bit, zoned in on ‘award-winning musical’ and promptly sent through my RSVP. I’ve always been partial to a good sing-a-long and sequins.
Note to self: Read invitations properly*.
Thrill Me is a cautionary tale of obsession, co-dependency and addiction to another person. This is the story of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, a couple who brutally murdered fourteen year old Bobby Franks in the mid 1920s, and were sentenced to life in prison. What drove them to do this? Their desire to commit the ultimate crime undetected.
And I thought Les Misérables was bordering on dark…
Trapped in a master-slave relationship and completely absorbed in each other, Nathan and Richards’ intimate connection twists beyond the realm of normal and leads them to make a horrible life changing decision. Think of the worst crush you ever had and just keep multiplying. These two were literally nuts about each other.

“Don’t let Josh Thomas’ youthful charm fool you”, it cautions on The Comedy Store website…well oops, it did. This cardigan clad comedian is a delight to watch, especially for someone with a soft spot for self confessed geeks.
Probably known best for his spot on Channel 10’s Talkin’ ‘bout Your Generation, at just 22, Josh Thomas has a gift for turning awkward life moments into hilarious on-stage stories.
Very much at his own expense, Josh’s show Things That I Have Said Before takes you through the “what not to dos” he’s learnt thus far. His raw honesty is laugh-out-loud funny and his timid demeanour makes his quirky remarks all the more surprising.
Currently performing at Sydney’s Comedy Store, this intimate venue is the perfect fit for Josh’s endearing humour. However, a word of warning – don’t go to the bathroom mid show. This courteous comedian may let his manners get the best of him, “No it’s fine, we’ll wait”, Thomas shouted to a man he spotted making a bathroom dash. “I wouldn’t want you to miss anything”, he cheekily quipped.
Covering everything from his loss on Celebrity MasterChef, his love of mojitos and his failures with the opposite sex, you are bound to be left wanting more.
Having already performed sell-out seasons at the Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals this year, Josh has returned to Sydney for his last live shows of 2009. Tickets are available from Tuesday 27 October – Saturday 7 November (no show Sun or Mon) and available at www.comedystore.com.au
