When in comes to a winter bath some might say the hotter the better – it isn’t worth doing if you don’t come out sweating! While others like nothing better than a body-temperature esque 40C or so to soothe away the stress of the day. But what is best from a skin care perspective? Are we doing ourselves more harm than good by sweating it out or are we missing one of life’s simple pleasures by going cold-turkey? Let’s look at the science.
Our body sits at a rather cozy and oh-so-constant (unless sick) 37 ish C on the inside while the outside can get as cold as 6C or as warm as 37C depending on where we are, what we are doing and how long we do it for. It is important for our insides to remain at a constant temperature as this provides the optimum environment for our organs to work, blood to flow and water to be managed. Our bodies are constantly trying to keep things in balance – the term for this is homeostasis.
Our outside is a different story! If you think about it, it is important for us to ‘feel’ cold or warm on the outside so that we can make the environmental changes needed to help our insides in regulating temperature. Our skin has many nerve cells running through it to pick up on heat and cold as well as other stimuli.
But does a hot bath do damage?
A number of scientific studies have shown skin to become more permeable (the ease of which things can pass through) to water as the temperature rises (here is a study that is free to view). This would lead me to believe that as the bath temperature increases, your skin temperature increases and therefore the permeability of the skin increases. If your skin is more open to sucking in water at higher temperatures it would probably mean that it would go wrinkly quicker in hot water than cold – what a great experiment to do at home!

Tips for the lips:
· Preparation - always start with well conditioned lips! For kissable lips apply a lip balm 30 mins or so prior to deeply moisturise your lips. Wipe away any excess before beginning with your lip liner. · For small or uneven lips always use a lip liner for fuller looking, well balanced lips. · By lining your entire mouth, including the sides and body of the lips your chosen lip colour will last longer. · For fuller looking lips apply a liner one shade darker than your own lip colour. · Lip liner does not need to be the same colour as your lipstick or gloss. Natural, nude colours work great with all colours. (Try Adorn’s ‘Lip Define’ mineral pencils in Toffee, Rustic Mocha, Natural Pink or Natural Red. RRP $25) · For brighter, whiter teeth stay away from brown shades as this can draw attention to discoloured teeth. Red is a great colour for instant teeth brightening – but stay away from blue based reds as these too can accentuate discolouration. (Try Adorn’s Perfect Pout Mineral Lipstick in Natural red. RRP $32)
Eyelluring looks:
· Ensure your eyeliner is sharp so you do not drag the delicate skin around the eyes. · Eyeliner should be applied at the lash line to create the illusion of fuller eyelashes. · You can use eyeliner to change the shape of your eyes; extending the line on the outer corners out and up is one way to do this. · Always ensure the outer ¼ of the eye is thicker than the rest of the line. · Eyeliner looks great on the bottom lash line, but be sure to take it the full way across or the outer ¼ of the lash line and never half way as it cuts the look of the eye in half and looks disproportionate. · If you have dark under eye circles never wear blue eyeliner on the bottom eyelashes. Blue liner draws unwanted attention to dark circles and if you are prone to liner smudging during the day it will look even worse! · Black eyeliner can be quite harsh on most eyes sometimes even making them appear smaller. Try a dark brown (Adorn’s Smokey Quartz. RRP $25-35) for a more flattering, softer look. · Don’t be afraid to try colour! Dark greens, purples and greys look simply amazing and they make your eye colour really pop! If you do not own coloured eyeliner apply your usual black or brown and with a slant brush (wet or dry) dip it into your favorite eye shadow and apply directly over your eyeliner for a smoldering, defined eye. (Try Adorn’s Eye Create, mineral metallic eye shadows. RRP $25)

Scott Barnes, renowned makeup artist, who is the man behind Jennifer Lopez's iconic look has a new book out called About Face. Scott reveals his techniques and tips on how to create beautiful looks for women of all skin tones, textures, and ages.
Here are some of his tips:
What's the best makeup look for Spring? Almost ice-cream pale shades. If you're going to do eye shadow, it should be soft, and blushes should be really soft, too. It's a time of rebirth, so I say, "You know what? Let's look fresh." What’s the best way for a woman who has minimal time to incorporate some of your principles into her daily makeup application? There's a chapter in the book, with a woman named Linda, that's about exactly that. I always tell people that at minimum, the easiest way to pull your look together is by curling your eyelashes, then applying a beautiful mascara — I like Cover Girl. Use eye drops to really brighten up your eyes; one of my favorite brands in the world is Naphcon-A because they last up to 12 hours and they're lubricating, so they don't dry out your eyes like a Visine does. Then, throw on a lip gloss. What are your tricks for getting a great eyelash curl?

Cosmetic Surgery - Is it for You? Would you ever do it? Have you thought about it but are not sure and have questions? Stylescene was privileged to have access to Dr. Kourosh Tavakol, who has answered our probing questions. Q1: If I was wanting to have botox treatments, how would I know the best place to go. Do I see a beautician or a cosmetic surgeon or a dermatologist? Should they have qualifications? Do your research and look for a clinic that is under a supervision of a Plastic Surgeon. The person injecting should have at least 12 months experience in Injectables.
Q2: What is an estimated price for a facelift for someone in their 40s and what is the recovery time? Price all up is around $12,000. The recovery for a short scar facelift is about 2 weeks.
Q3: What is the best way to find a good cosmetic surgeon and what qualifications should he/she have. In my opinion its best to locate a Plastic Surgeon who specialises in Cosmetic surgery, namely a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. Doctors that refer to themselves as Cosmetic Surgeon tend to be inadequately qualified and in most instances are mere general practitioners. Thank you to our readers who asked the questions and a big thank you to Dr. Tavakoli for providing us with the answers. | Dr. Tavakoli is a fully qualified Australian trained Plastic Surgeon specialising in Cosmetic Surgery. He is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons - the societies affiliated and recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for Plastic Surgeons. The most popular cosmetic operations performed by Dr Tavakoli in the past 12 months are: · Breast Augmentation · Rhinoplasty · Short Scar Facelift · Labioplasty · Post Pregnancy Makeover: Tummy tuck, breast lift · Liposculpture · Gynaecomastia · Pectoral Implants · Ears, Facial implants, Buccal fat pad removal Visit Dr. Tavakoli's website here: www.drtavakoli.com.au | | |

Common Beauty Mistakes that can add Years to your Appearance
Wrong colour and type of foundation
As your skin ages, it becomes drier and fine lines become more visable, so the foundation you wore in your 20’s just won’t suit your skin’s condition in your 30’s, 40’s and so on. Avoid foundations that are mattifying as you get older or if your skin is dry, instead opt for a foundation that will hydrate your skin. Try Adorn’s Porefect & Perfect – loose or liquid foundation with 20+ sun protection factor or try the hydrating cream mineral foundations. These will not only nourish your skin, but contain mica to scatter and diffuse light which helps to minimise the look of lines and winkles. When it comes to choosing the right shade, be sure to try foundations in daylight and steer clear of those with peach or pink undertones as they can make skin look dull. When applying foundation less is best as you want people complimenting you on your beautiful skin – not your makeup! Primers are also a good investment, as they deliver extra moisture and smooth out the complexion. In most cases a moisturiser is not needed when using a primer – especially if you a have normal to oily skin type. Try Adorn’s Porefect & Perfect – Foundation Base Mineral Skin Primer.

How to make your eyes pop this party season?
Find below some flattering colours to suit you:
Brown eyes – Gotta love these guys they look just sensational when you use complementary colours - try blue, turquoise and plum. Not quite you but still want to look good use the colours similar in tone – peach, brown, copper.
Blue eyes – Make a statement with golden browns, gold/copper or peach. Just want to add a little something go for blue, turquoise and purple for basic colours that you know will go.
Green eyes – Want to rival stunning cat’s eyes - try purple, plum and rose to really bring out the green. Keeping them green is okay too with shades similar to your eye colour - green, gold and even a touch of blue (depending on the green of course).
See this colour guide below:
You should also take into account your hair colour and skin tone and adjust accordingly.

Party Glamour - 7 Holiday Makeup Tips for Busy Women With the party season almost on top of us we all need to refresh our "Party Glamour Repertoires". Almost all of us are pressed for time and don't have hours or even an hour to do our makeup. So I have compiled some tips for getting ready for that party or BBQ no matter how rushed you are.
1) Start Fresh: Before you do anything else, make sure your skin is well cleansed and moisturised. Don't even think about just adding some more makeup on top of what you have on. Trust me, this will only take a few minutes but the results will justify spending the time. Take your makeup off; the makeup remover wipes are fantastic to remove makeup in a hurry.
Rinse your face with water, and then add moisturiser. You may find that the moisturiser you used in winter may be too heavy for summer, especially if you are outdoors, so opt for an oil free moisturiser. In summer a lot of women find tinted moisturisers an excellent choice.

Spring is well and truly here and that precious little inner voice shrieks… “It’s time to clean!”, so whilst you’re at it – don’t forget to include your make-up bag. Many of our clients reveal in our workshops that they have owned make-up longer than they care to admit with some announcing they own items longer than they have been mother’s of teenage children. You do the maths but I can share with you…that’s a bit longer than manufacturer’s recommendation. Okay, this is extreme, however there are many unused, unproductive, out-of-date items lurking around in the bottom of make-up bags Australia wide.
If you are scratching the top of eyeshadow or powder before you apply it or shaking the bottle furiously to try and get your product to mix again then it’s probably time to say “good-bye”. I know it can tough…you think of that $40 you spent when the lady at the counter so enthusiastically informed you that you couldn’t live without it. “Of course I can’t ??” Never the less make-up doesn’t last forever so to keep it working well, looking good and your face free from unwanted bacteria check out the ‘throw out’ guide below. - Foundation Liquid – 12-18 mths
- Foundation Powder – 2 years
- Lipgloss/Lipstick – 2 years
* always check the manufacturers guide for specific information.
So go on girls – take care of yourself. If you don’t use it, get rid of it!

Mineral make-up. What is it really, its benefits and how do you use it?
A pure mineral make-up, not an impostor which is usually crammed with synthetic ingredients, has more superior benefits and uses over traditional make-up... Once you begin using a pure, mineral cosmetic, you will never go back to your old make-up again!
So what is a pure mineral make-up?
What to consider when determining whether your mineral make-up is pure.
First, be aware of companies that do not label their ingredients on the actual product. You may find it on their website, but even then some companies do not even list it there – you are required to contact them for it.
For a mineral to be pure it must be in loose form only, any other consistency, for example say a compact, cream or liquid are not a pure mineral and must have had other ingredients added to create this consistency. A pure mineral consists of Zinc oxide, Titanium dioxide, mica and iron oxides. If you prefer your make-up to be of a consistency other than in loose form, ensure the extra ingredients added are natural, and are free from any chemical preservatives, fragrances and animal ingredients. Most importantly ensure your foundation has at least a SPF of 20+. A good mineral make-up should be ground to a micro-fine powder and work in harmony with the skin allowing it to breathe. It should not contain fillers such as talc, Oryza Sativa (rice starch) and Bismuth Oxychloride, chemicals, parabens, animal ingredients such as Carmine (dried female insect) or any other toxic horrors and is 100% natural. A pure mineral make-up such as Adorn Mineral Cosmetics will be calming to the skin, making it ideal for women prone to skin sensitivity and being fragrance-free it is also important for delicate skin. Pure mineral colours tend to be more subtle and earthy-looking than traditional cosmetics and therefore they give a very natural-looking finish. In fact minerals provide a sheer, skin-like, flawless coverage that should look and feel like your very own skin!

As we age our skin thins and sags a little as the structure holding it all together relaxes its grip and slows down its collagen and elastin creating activities. While this is a perfectly normal function of human ageing it is one that many of us would like to put a halt to. When it comes to looking young, the fat cheeks have it!
So, what can we do?
1. Blame your parents as the way we age has a fair bit to do with our genes. Not very useful though!
2. Gain weight. The extra weight will plump out your cheeks making you look a little smoother faced BUT beware, the negative health effects of being overweight far outweigh the benefits of being wrinkle free! 3. Lash on the anti-ageing cream. There are plenty of creams on the market that claim to boost collagen and rebuild elastin, rebuilding your skin from within. While many of these creams do work, most of the effect seen is from super moisturization (a well moisturized skin is plumper and smoother) as it is difficult (although not impossible) to get the collagen and elastin to where they are needed. Other creams include ingredients that naturally re-boot the skin’s scaffolding such as the many peptides, antioxidants and vitamins and again, these all work to a point but only if they can reach the desired part of the skin in high enough quantities. Oh, and of course these creams come with lashings of sun protection- cosmetic therapist here I come……
